Listening: Understanding the Message in the Words
The directions below will take you through Chapter 4 of the book The Power of Our Words by Paula Denton.
1. Take a look at the Wordle created using a summary of Chapter 4 to quickly understand some of the important vocabulary.
2. View the definition of "listening" below. Then, talk with a partner about your own definition of "listening." If you are working through this book study at home, you can email your definition.
3. Read your group's assigned section. Talk with your group about why it is important to listen to our students. Be ready to share out one profound thought with the book study group. If you are working at home, select one area to read with focus and email your thoughts.
4. Review the Pausing and Listening slide below. Then, take a look at the examples of effective listening behaviors on the comic strips that follow. We will practice some of these important listening skills together.

4. Take a moment to think of a small moment story to share with a partner. Take turns sharing your story and practicing pausing and paraphrasing within the conversation.
